The Hero’s Journey: Elliot in ET Who is the real hero in ET: The Extra Terrestrial? ET is a heartfelt movie from 1982. In ET a boy, Elliot, finds and extra terrestrial in his backyard and makes a strong connection so he tries to hide him from the government after that fails, he is forced to rescue him. With a little help from a his buddies he saves ET and ET goes home after a heartfelt goodbye. After examining ET and the Hero's Journey it is clear to that the hero is Elliot because he has a call to adventure, a death and rebirth, and finally a return, following the hero’s journey. The road of trials is a series of tests or ordeals, often the hero fails one or more challenges. An example of this is when he finds Et in his backyard and he brings him inside and follows his first trial of hiding Et from his family. Which goes well at first but then, when Et is alone and finds some beer in Elliot's house and he gets drunk, now that Elliot is connected to Et he also gets drunk and he is at school. This is a couple of examples of trials he has to face, he even fails in hiding Et as his sister finds him. He does go into a death and rebirth. He descends into a darkness when ET is captured and is dying, but because Elliot is attached to him he starts to die as well,the government takes them into quarantine, “You have no right to do this… you’re scaring him… I can take care of him”(ET). This is where Elliot enters his darkness and is shouting and dying just trying to stop the government from testing on him. In ET, there is not much rejoicing, but Elliot does take a magic flight and return. When he finally steals ET back from the government, he has his brother drive the stolen van, but that does not work so well and they have to hop onto their bikes with ET wrapped up and they head for the forest. The government are not happy that they escape go after them and the bikes can not outrun the police, but ET using his mind and love and lift the whole group off the ground and carries them to safety. This is the magical flight because they fly, but they could never complete the journey without ET raising them up and carrying them away. This can be argued that its is the most action packed part of his journey as many magic flights are. He does return to his normal life, but not without learning something and agreeing with his fate. When ET gets to the forest where he first landed and the police and his mom are in hot pursuit, ET’s home ship lands out of the sky. Elliot knowing that ET must leave tries to bargain with him to stay on Earth where it would be just him and ET, but ET knows he must leave. As Elliot starts to let go of him ET looks at him and takes out his finger and the point of his finger glows and he touches Elliot’s heart and says “I’ll always be right here”, then loads into his ship as Elliot and his
