The Fall is a wonderful movie directed by Tarsem Singh. Tarsem Singh is a director who has directed several movies of varying success. The Cell. Mirror, Mirror. Immortals. And, most recently, Self/Less.
Before this movie was made, Singh had made a small fortune directing music videos and television commercials. Instead of going wild and indulging, he put all of the money towards making this film. And it shows. It really shows. This movie radiates passion and love.
On the surface, The Fall is a very simple story about a little girl named Alexandria and a man named Roy and the story that manages to bridge the gap between them. Of course, that’s a very surface-level analysis of the story and underneath that surface there are many layers and elements

It leads to a story that is about stories. About love. About connecting with people through stories. Standard elements that you’d see in many other movies. What separates it from those movies, however, is the fact that this movie is not only stunning in its imagery, but also multifaceted in its themes and ideas. Many of these are visual and just barely hinted at, so they’re easy to miss.
We have the first bit of symbolism. Oranges. In the film, Alexandria throws oranges at a Priest and also, at the end of the film, puts the dentures of a man who has recently passed into two empty orange peels and buries them.
Oranges are significant in Chinese mythology. As they represent life, new beginnings, and prayers for good fortune. Not only that, but in the west they represent fertility which, in turn, has links to femininity. And, of course, it is sometimes the fruit of “The Fall Of Man”, occasionally replacing the Apple.
As for the round shape, it means many things. Immortality. Eternity. Unbroken time. Jesus was painted, as a child, holding an orange.
Teeth represent life in a different sense. They grind up food and provide us with what we need from that food. In a way, they represent many things. Anything that has to do with “grinding” and distilling. For now, though, we’ll say they represent life. The essence of
