It is eight o’clock on Monday morning and for most the daily grind of the weekdays has begun. We get in our cars and drive to the job that we have had for years or we drive to our school and attend classes for what seems like years but it is really only a couple of months. For most of us the latter of the two scenarios describes us as college students. The only thing that needs to be added is the countless hours outside of class studying and also the part time or full time jobs that some of us have.
Throughout this mundane Monday everyone is either thinking about the weekend to come or reminiscing about the weekend that has passed. There are normal thoughts and sayings that float around, like; “I cant wait until Friday,” or “Monday again” …show more content…
This is why Bonhoeffer takes “The Day’s Work,” or “IT” and completely changes the normal attitude with one simple step. Bonhoeffer pushes through the mundane IT to the joy filled, purposeful “Thou.” He explains how Christians can have purpose in the mundane, and how we can take back our lives and our joy during 8-5 on weekdays by focusing on the One who gives life and joy. The solution is prayer, but not prayer as an action but as a mindset. By redefining prayer as a mindset Bonhoeffer brings practicality to 1 Thessalonians 5:17 “Pray without ceasing.” Whenever I used to hear this verse it always confused me because I wondered how this was possible. How can you pray all day, everyday and how am I supposed to focus on what needs to be done if I am always praying to God? This however is not the type of prayer that Bonhoeffer is getting at. Yes we are suppose to have times where we are on our knees and actually praying to God but those times are what should catapult us into the mindset of prayer throughout or days. We should begin our days on our knees and by doing so our days will have meaning, purpose and life in them. The reason for this is because who we are supposed to be centered on when we are on our knees. We are supposed to be centered on the Christ, our savior, or hope, our life and our days become consumed by the joy that overflows from HIM. As we do this more and more it becomes easier to have a prayer mindset where the joy of Christ is ever present and where the purpose of the love of Christ surrounds our decisions, our mundane tasks, our assignments, our relationships, and ultimately, our
