COMM 117 CREATING WEATLH OR MAN SLAUGHTER?
For the most part, people who work in sweatshops opted to do so. Though they might not like working in sweatshops, but they are forced to do so due their unfortunate circumstances such as living in an undeveloped country were poverty is extreme. By working in sweatshops, people in undeveloped countries especially women get to earn a small income, learn about business practices, and benefit from improved social and economic conditions that with economic growth (Garyfalakis).

Going back to 1911 and looking into the disastrous fire incident that happened in Triangle Shirtwaist factory, it was reported that 145 workers were kill all due to poor working conditions and negligence of the owners of the factory to the demands of the workers. According to History.com, “The factory was a true sweatshop, employing young immigrant women who worked in a cramped space at lines of sewing machines. Nearly all the workers were teenaged girls who did not speak English and made only about $15 per week working 12 hours a day, every day”. It can be noted that the working environment was clustered which inhibited the movements of the workers, and hence contributing to the large amount of deaths caused by the fire. Secondly, the workers worked 12hrs daily and were paid $15/week which would be estimated to about $50/week in 2015 (due to inflation)! Why would you put their lives in danger knowing fully of the consequences? Is it all because of capitalists’ selfish need to make more money? But before jumping on the bandwagon and trying to defend the use of sweatshops using the theories of supply and demand, globalization and division of labor. It should be noted that these theories all emphasize on the fact that when there’s demand, supply (use of sweatshop labor) has to be increased, but it still doesn’t justify why workers are being treated as slaves in their workplace. Moreover, since demand and supply have been increased, it is definite that profit is being made as the total marginal revenue of the firm would increase and the workers in the sweatshops should be highly compensated from these profits by raising their wages, making their working environment conducive to work and by providing good health insurance for the workers. But if the sweatshops are located in another country and the workers are being paid more than the minimum wage in that country, then the owners should create workers benefits such field trips, good health facilities for them and their families, and the needs of the workers should be met
