Ron Mueck is a famous Australian hypo-realistic sculptor who was born in Melbourne in 1958. His German born parents were toymakers which allowed Mueke to experiment with model making and puppetry from an early age. After failing entry in art school he began a career making models for children’s films and television and move to London in 1982 to start his own company. While working with the advertising industry creating props and models Mueke longed to create art that was perfect from all angles and in 1996 began creating sculptures. Mueck creates super realistic sculptures of human beings in key stages of life. All these mixed media assist to create a life like, captivating and interesting sculpture. “Seated Women” is one of Mueck’s smaller artwork figures and is 74.9 x 61.9 x 55.9 centimeters in size, half of its natural scale. “Seated Women” consists of an elderly women sitting down who appears to be physically exhausted and taking a rest. The woman is slightly hunch over, her hands clasped together with her elbows leaning on her knees. Her face heavy from age and her calves swollen from a long day out. Her clothes, including her skirt, top and cardigan have thick lines emphasis the warmth of the clothes. Curly thin lines used for her hair show age. The woman is tiny, frail with an organic oval shape face. Dark colours for her clothes are used to represent winter and the final stage of her life. Dark colours are also used to represent a hard and strong life that she has led. In contrast her pale yellowish face against red blood shot eyes gives us an impression of a women with health issues. The texture of her face seems smooth but sagging with wrinkles. Her hair is ruffled but fine and soft. Her clothes are traditional but thick and warm. Her shoes are practical with a small heel and she is wearing thick brown stocking for warmth. The tone of the artwork is one of loneliness and tiredness of life. She is a woman that has had a long full life but it has taken a toll on her
