The Lottery, by Shirley Jackson, is about a small town carrying out their version of the lottery. Now you probably thinking how can there be different versions, or that must have been a boring story. In this small town the lottery is on June 27th, they do this yearly, every family draws from the black box, and it’s usually the father. The family with the green dot on it has to choose from another box, the lucky family member to draw the piece of paper with a black dot on it wins! Sounds awesome right? Wrong, that family member then gets stoned to death because this lottery is all about sacrificing a life so that the crops will grow better and the town will have enough food. If you are a Christian there is an event where you have to sacrifice one thing for a certain amount of time. What if you can’t do that because of survival? I mean if you are a Christian and you can’t give anything up for a while because everything you have is something you need. A town believes that if they sacrifice someone their crops will grow tall and they will have good food until the next sacrifice. Now do you think that it is right for someone to lose a family member because of a belief? Well they do, so obviously not all sacrifices are needed. Some things in life don’t need to be sacrificed. The Lottery has many lessons hidden in it and many themes. Sacrifice is one of them. And it isn’t always good, it can hurt and be very painful, and not all beliefs are good just because someone else thinks they are.
