Ever since I was little, I believed there were two types of readers, fast and slow. I knew I was a slow reader and was envious of the ones that were speedy. Little did I know that reading speed had nothing to do with how good of a reader you were. I was recently introduced to the essay “Rhetorical Reading Strategies and the Construction of Meaning” written by Christina Haas and Linda Flowers. This essay opened my eyes and made me realize that there is various type of readers. Along with this essay, George Lakoff and Mark Johnsons piece Metaphors We live By, come up with the idea of creating things into metaphors. These essays are tied together by the idea of looking deeper into ordinary things in our lives.

This fits with the metaphor of a blank canvas because before you begin painting you think about what you’re going to create and if it’s going to tell a story. Haas and Flower state “Comments coded as content strategies are concerned with content or topic information…The reader may be questioning, interpreting, or summing content, and paraphrasing” (175). The authors illustrates that content is the most basic type of reading and includes locating the topics of the piece. A blank canvas has so many possibilities just like a content reader. A content reader picks up a lot of information and gets a decent grasp on a essay. content readers will see their job as finding the main idea or locating the intro, main points, and …show more content…
The type of readers are content, functional/feature, and rhetorical. It’s very important to consider every aspect when reading so you can truly get the interpretation of the essay. Haas and Flowers types of readers can be compared to Lakoff and Johnsons idea of everything can become a metaphor. I was able to turn each type of reader into a metaphor. Content readers could be a blank canvas. Functional/feature readers can see reading as an art museum. Rhetorical readers may see reading as a photograph. After reading these essays I have a different perspective when it comes to different reading
