In Ernest Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants” one might ask what kind of relationship is there between Jig and The American? I believe that their relationship is in trouble. The emotional discord between Jig and The American is tearing them apart. They each seem to desire something that conflicts with the others wishes, which weakens their relationship. Jig does not want the abortion, as it is implied, but it seems as though The American would like for her to have one.
