Nike’s mission statement fits the current market environment because it is a global product that states they are serving athletes of the world.

According to My Strategic Plan, organizations should base their mission on their distinctive competencies which are a resource that the company performs well compared to its competitors (n.d.). It seems as if Home Depot’s core competency is part of their mission statement in their “goal to provide the highest level of service, the broadest selection of products, and the most competitive prices.” Nike’s statement seems to fit their core competencies by providing inspiration and innovation to their customers. They want to provide something more than just a product, but a way to motivate and encourage their customers.

Home Depot’s statement seems to be realistically obtainable. In their day to day to decisions, they can incorporate all aspects of their mission statement. Nike’s mission statement is realistic in the sense that they involve themselves in demonstrating how they provide these services in testimonials or examples. Their customers will not necessary be inspired or see innovation if they just handed products, the organization must be involved in the movement.

Home Depot fails to follow through with this criteria. The first half of their mission statement fits the criteria, but when they add in their eight core values, it becomes muddled. The eight core values are hard to remember, and some are too vague. They bring more questions than answers. Nike’s statement fits these criteria perfectly. The mission statement is inspirational in itself.
