Even with the toughest times that has seemed to come harshly into their lives. Although this family could be described as suffering, due to the fact that they're constantly struggling and being pushed back everytime they might think they are in a good position. However, their braveness had overcome that part of them. For every suffer has to be pushed through with braveness. Their bravery is how they got to the end, it wasn't the suffering. Suffering is something you get, but bravery is something you have.

Throughout this theme of "Ashes of Roses", Mary Jane Auch is demonstrating the challenges of being an immigrant in America and how you can't let those struggles get in the way, yet must be brave and keep striving no matter what.
