He continues to state that “the practices of Christian worship function as the altar of Christian formation, the heart and soul, the center of gravity of the task of discipleship”. What Jamie smith means in that second quotes there is that worship affect us at a pre-cognitive level. Worship shapes us, train our hearts and begin to have a ripple effect on our lives and the things that we do. He means that the practices of Christian worship are meant to uplift our hearts to God and bring us to a place where we will then find our true identity, worship gives us meaning. Recently, if not in the last twenty years, several evangelical Christians have begun to convert to a more traditional aspect of Christianity, few have seemed to notice the thread connecting all these conversions to be a need for deeper meaning in worship. Thomas Howard's book Evangelical Is Not Enough: Worship of God in Liturgy and Sacrament speaks to those longing as well as how to satisfy them through the liturgy. Tom Howard's whole aim is to direct the reader to understand that every church needs to identify its roots and appreciate the two-thousand year old history behind communion. Furthermore he does an excellent job in breathing life into doctrines and practices of both the evangelical and catholic world, that many of us lose the sight…

Kolev, Kaloyan Writing Assignment One 9/8 The Sermon on the Mount 10/05/2015 Medieval European History The second most important teaching of The Sermon on the Mount is that God’s followers should not worry about food or clothing, because life is much more than that. Jesus assures the people that if they serve their Father, they will be able to “seek and find” everything they need to live a comfortable life (7:8).…
As we move farther away from the days of the Reformation, the Church becomes guilty of forgetting what our forefathers fought and died for. As a Church we often glorify the work of the clergy and treat those who work in full-time ministry as more godly individuals. The Church must recapture the reformation doctrine of vocation because only when “a young Christian woman realizes it is just as spiritual to sing for the Metropolitan Opera as it is to sing in the church choir, we will begin to see a new generation of liberated Christians calling attention to their Maker and Redeemer.…

6 pg. 95) Walsh and Middleton make a powerful analogy in Chapter 6 with Christian Musicians stating that “Christian musicians may feel limited to singing religious or “spiritual” songs, remaining out of touch with music that deals with the whole life.” (The Transforming Vision Chpt 6 pg.98) By doing this, Walsh and Middleton claim, Christian musicians are “…merely adding faith to their vocation, rather than letting faith transform their vocation.” (The Transforming Vision Chpt.…

Spiritual disciplines are something that take a lot of work, they are things that don’t always come easy, and they often require practice to develop. As a believer, it is easy to just assume the role of a mediocre Christian who often overlooks spiritual growth, thinking that going to church every Sunday is enough to effectively grow in ones walk with Christ. Through study, it becomes obvious that Sunday Christianity is not enough, it takes work as a Christian to truly change and grow, and to make that work happen, we have to develop disciplines that will take root in our lives, so that Christ will ultimately change us and grow us as we seek to follow and please him. This paper is going to be a book review of Donald S. Whitney’s book, “Spiritual Disciplines of the Christian Life”. Whitney dives into the subject of spiritual disciplines and looks to scripture bringing up many key points that make the easy to understand for the reader and he gives practical understanding for the different disciplines.…
The overall premise of Wheeler and Whaley’s The Great Commission to Worship is that worship and evangelism are not to be isolated from each other. Worship and evangelism go together and they impact how the believer is to live out the commandment of the Great Commission. Wheeler and Whaley make the assertion that evangelism and worship have been misunderstood, misinterpreted, and misapplied, and offer suggestions to fix this problem. The ultimate purpose of the Christian, according to Wheeler and Whaley, is to glorify God in all that he or she does.…
There are a lot of similarities and differences in the way Christians worship. Worship is something that can be done in numerous ways, but the overall purpose remains the same. Many have differing opinions on how to worship depending on their preference. Some of the ways Christians worship include using visual art, music, and theatre. Each way of worshipping has its own unique qualities, but there are many comparisons between the worshipping styles.…
The introduction to the meaning of worship in spirit and in truth defines a person’s relationship and experience or encounter with God. Therefore, the two key ideas that was of interested in the book review was: what worship is and what worship is not. Worship is spiritual, therefore, the evident of true worship has to come from the heart, mind, and soul of a person. The heart, mind, and soul are components of spiritual transformation in a relationship with Jesus Christ. Secondly, worship is loving others, as example of God’s love for the world, (Jn. 3:16, EVS).…
