One of the first acts of repression in the regime was the systematic burning of books. On 10 May 1933, University students began to destroy any book that was contrary to Nazi ideology(London Jewish Cultural Centre, 2011).This burning of books acted as public gathering, similar to parades, that was used to celebrate the Nazi party and bring the members closer together but simultaneously destroy any work deemed “anti-Nazi”. This was an example of Hitler’s success in shielding the German population from anything that could give them the wrong perception of the Nazi party and ideals, keeping the population on his side and content with Hitler’s actions.For many of the persecuted artists it was either extremely difficult or impossible for them to restart their careers after 1945(Kiesel, 2013), showing once again how Hitler was victorious in achieving his task to eradicate Jewish culture from Germany. By ridding the German population of any art that goes against the Nazi ideology, Hitler is making sure that there is no chance of the population drawing inspiration or sympathy for their works.
