The high school has an average of nearly one third to one half of adolescents that have a diagnosis of either anxiety or depression. The local high school in 2012-2013 had 850 students. Nearly three quarters of the adolescents are on medications for the disease. One of the most important interventions that would help these adolescents, would be a hotline or person that the adolescent could talk to when they needed someone to listen to them. This may help with the episodes and help decrease the occurrences. Also the hotline could again educate the adolescents to call at any time of the day or night. Another would be to get the appropriate treatment for the disease and to manage the disease. Provide support and resources for the person, like a place to go or support groups with adolescents that are dealing with the same issues. These are a major intervention that could help the adolescent.
The community leaders that would support the interventions would be, the school nurse, social worker or case manager and the superintendent of the schools. One outcome I would to see is that the adolescent does not turn to drugs or alcohol for help. Another outcome would be to get fast treatment for the disease and not just pass it off as a teenager thing. Educate the parents for signs that their children are in need of help, so “they can have the ability to carry on productive activities and live a rewarding life” (Healthy Maine 2020, p.62).
