Throughout the south, there are countless confederate monuments, parks, statues, and landmarks. In Charlottesville, Virginia, these monuments are being taken down, which begs the question, should all monuments representing the confederacy be removed? In the historic area of downtown Wilmington, various monuments are on display honoring confederate soldiers and landmarks. Such landmarks are seen by some as a symbol of rich southern history from the Civil War, and others believe it symbolizes white supremacy and the idolization of slave owners in the 1800’s. Stemming from recent events concerning Confederate monuments, the statue honoring Davis has been vandalized for being “on the wrong side of history”. On August 11th, a white flag was shown hanging from the statue, symbolizing defeat and surrender. One protestor (who lives and works in downtown Wilmington) exclaimed, “It doesn’t have too much of an effect on me except my empathy” … “There is no context as to why it’s displayed. It’s a participation trophy for someone on the wrong side of history. It needed some context and the white surrender flag gives it context. A war was fought here and this stuff happened, but the white flag gives it context”. The Governor of North Carolina has his opinion on the issue, saying: “Some people cling to the belief that the Civil War was fought over states’ rights. But history is not on their side,” Cooper wrote in a news release. “We cannot continue to glorify a war against the United States of America fought in the defense of slavery. These monuments should come
