The disease cholera plays a pinto role in this book, as it is the catalyst of the relationship between Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza. Additionally, cholera Dr. Urbino’s main passion in life is the platform for Dr. Juvenal Urbino’s interest towards Fermina. Ultimately towards the end of their lives Fermina and Florentino decide to remain under the flag of cholera- or passion they find a new meaning for the word. Cholera, or love, no longer controls them. Rather, they take control over their passion, redefine love.
Fermina Daza, the daughter of the wealthy Lorenzo Daza, first moves to the city from San Juan de la Cienaga where there is an outbreak of cholera. This is now Florentino Ariza initially notices the young girl. Florentino delivers a telegraph to Lorenzo, and notices Fermina teaching her aunt to read. Florentino develops strong feelings and a deep love for Fermina after seeing her only one time. Florentino would sit in the park every day “until he saw the impossible maiden walk by…”(56). Florentino and Fermina learn that love means accepting the other person with all their faults, flaws and weaknesses. For the first time they are able to find they are able to find themselves and allow themselves to explore the passion that had controlled him and the passion that she was never able to actualize isolated from society and its standards on that boat in the river which was subject to mistreatment due to a passion that was unable to be expressed until now. Fermina has spent her life living under Dr. Urbino’s societally imposed shadow. She was unable to be the woman she desire and to find her own passion. For the first time in a long time, Ferina is able to learn about herself and find her passion and do what wants to do. Florentino has idealized to Fermina to be a beautiful personal without flaws. Yet, when he finally gets to be with her he realizes she is not the person he idealized, yet they accept each other and this is what creates their lasting
