This has become a very controversial topic whether or not Burnette has gotten enough credit. “The play was not produced when the Warner Bros bought it from Murray Burnette for $20,000” (Harmetz). Around 1986, Alison and Burnette tried to regain control of the play, but the Warner Bros paid them off with $100,000 each and the right to produce the original play (Harmetz). In the film Casablanca, Ilsa, the main female figure, is reliant on two men, Rick and Laszlo. For example, in one of the scenes, Ilsa says to Rick, “you have to think for both of us” (Curtiz). This exemplifies how Ilsa is so useless that she can not even create her own thoughts. Casablanca is just one film of the time that portrays women this way, but women in film have changed since the 40’s and become much stronger and more independent. Wonder Woman is another example of a strong, independent woman. Wonder Woman is a film that was created in 2017 and is directed by Patty Jenkins. Wonder Woman is a fictional movie about a lady who is fighting in the war to end all wars. In this film, Wonder Woman is a masculine female with armor; she is independent and tough. Both Rosie and Wonder Woman are strong when compared to Ilsa, however, they both possess phallic symbols. For Rosie, her rivet gun and for Wonder Woman, her body armor. This leaves me wondering if these women would still be seen as strong without their masculine
