How would you respond when faced with adversity, would you run from it or face it? In the book Fever 1793 Matilda Cook a fourteen year old girl was faced with many problems. For instance, her mother got ill with yellow fever and she sent her away with her grandfather out of Philadelphia. Her mother had a notion that the fever was contagious, therefore she sent them off to go to the countryside. They had gotten on a wagon and the went off. She fell asleep in the searing heat. Mattie woke several hours later when the wagon came to a stop. Four horsemen with muskets blocked the road. They told everyone on the wagon that they needed to pass a medical test in order to enter the country side. Unfortunately grandfather did not pass the test. That left Matilda and her grandfather alone with no food in the middle of the countryside.

She would always argue with her mother about her freedom, but when her mother got ill everything changed. Her mother was afraid that their fever was spreading, so she sent young Matilda and grandfather to keep her safe, away from the infectious city. When they fled the city her grandfather started to have a worrying cough. Matilda's grandfather was a soldier who worked for George Washington. He went by the name captain William Farnsworth Cook. Grandfather taught Mattie some things about being a soldier. “Old soldiers trick,’ I said as I set off. Find a willow tree and you'll find some water nearby” (Anderson 85). At one point Captain Cook could not handle the heat anymore. Mattie had to find ways to keep both herself and her grandfather alive on her own.. She found some willow trees near her and took her grandfather’s empty canteen to find them some water. She had noticed that there were fish in the water so she used her petticoat to capture the fish.
