Commonly referred to as “the backbone of the Army,” the Non Commissioned Officer (NCO) corps has proven themselves capable of accomplishing the mission in both garrison and wartime operations. However, the drive to teach genuine leadership has lost its value, even among officers. Ingraham’s 1988 article, “Fear and Loathing in the Barracks-And the Heart of Leadership,” reveals many pitfalls that NCOs and officers have become subject to over transitional phases in the Army. For example, Ingraham points out that bad habits and not taking time to teach and develop Soldiers has debased soldier interaction and weakened Soldier progression. This is evident in today’s Army.
