In the short story Everything that Rises Must Converge it is important to note the traits and cultural beliefs that were passed on. Julian is given the unknown trait of being prejudicial towards African Americans. Although he believes he has the completely opposite mindset, Julian is unaware that the subtle racial innuendos are as blatantly racist as his mothers up front, racial remarks.
