In this stage, if the individual is able to successfully resolve their developmental struggle then they will achieve the virtue of that stage, in this case fidelity (Papalia & Martorell, 2015). Fidelity is finding your place in the world and uncovering your values (Papalia & Martorell, 2015). If the individual is successful then their sense of self will also be uncovered which should remain with them throughout their lives (Papalia & Martorell, 2015). According to Erikson, individuals achieve this state when they are able to decide their occupation, their values, and sexual identity (Papalia & Martorell, 2015). If the individual fails to development a sense of self, it can delay them achieving emotional maturity. According to Erikson, Ivo had begun the process of discovering who he was and finding his place in the world when he was displaced (Papalia & Martorell, 2015). He left all that was familiar to him, including friends and his place with them to start at the beginning. It is during this time that adolescents will test their boundaries and find independence. For Ivo, moving into an entirely new environment and home did not enable him to comfortably enter this stage and so it may be that the boundaries he choose to test were more extreme than he would have engaged in. When he moved in with his father, the home did not have the structure and rules that enabled an individual to successfully test the limits and boundaries in their environment.
