This podcast was very interesting. Ira Glass from WBEZ based out of Chicago speaks with a New York Times reporter named Nikole Hannah Jones. She speaks about how the school systems should be more integrated and why. She believes that if the schools were more integrated that the students grades would excel and their test scored would go up. She believes that if you get the black students in with the white students that they will have a better chance at achieving because they are now given the same things that white students are given such as, better facilities, better teacher, and quality instruction. She gives some statistics to back up her statements that black schools are worse off than white students such as, “The U.S. Department of Education put out data in 2014 showing that black and Latino kids in segregated schools have the least qualified teachers, the least experienced teachers. They also get the worst course offerings, the least access to AP and upper level courses, the worse facilities.” She also talks about the school District Normandy and how they unintentionally started desegregation. Normandy was where the teen Michael Brown that was shot and killed by a police officer attended school. Nikole Hannah Jones uses Normandy as an example of how bad the school districts when segregated. Normandy’s points for academic achievements were English 0, math 0, social studies 0, science 0, points for college placement 0. In 11 out of 13 measurements they got 0. They scored 10 out of 140 points. Later, she speaks about how Normandy district became an unaccredited school and the students were now allowed to be bused to other schools that would then offer the student’s better academic opportunities but, the parents and students at the school that they would be bused to did not like the idea of having these student’s attending their school because, of where
