Murrow intends to make the audience realize there are two sides to a story. In Murrow’s speech on the Future of News Media, Murrow says, “But in terms of information we are handicapping ourselves needlessly. Let us have a little competition. Not only in selling soap, cigarettes, and automobiles, but in informing a troubled, apprehensive but receptive public.” Murrow expresses how journalists are limiting themselves because they are afraid to cross over to the other side. He mentions how responsibility plays a major role in shaping the integrity in which is presented. This is shown in director George Clooney’s film Good Night And Good Luck. Clooney believes a journalist needs to overcome every obstacle no matter the given situation, if they want to be a true journalist. Within his speech on the Future of News Media, Murrow says, “For surely we shall pay for using this most powerful instrument of communication to insulate the citizenry from the hard and demanding realities which must indeed be faced if we are to survive.” Murrow implies the mass hysteria produced by Senator Joseph McCarthy not only isolated the public, but limited them to what news they receive and how they receive it. He compares the “powerful instrument” with how people use their knowledge to communicate by word of mouth, “demanding realities” to both sides of a story, and “survive” to the future of America.
