Critique of a Thoughtworld 1.) In Hirsch’s “critique of a thoughtworld”, from The Schools We Need and Why We Don’t Have Them, he begins by talking about what he believes to be is the “one true belief” among mainstream educationists. He believes that the “one true belief” is characterized as a “constantly repeated catechism” that has “currently no thinkable alternative”(Hirsch, p.69). What he means by this is that for quite some time now educationists have been using the same old out dated logic in our education system, and they will not look at any different options, because they will not accept that their “one true belief” could be wrong. If they could just put their beliefs and pride beside then we would be able to reform our schools and…
Poems are the hidden reality of the everyday life. Thousands of people do not value the power and potential a poem can have. Poems can actually change the perspective and the way of living for many people. Many find poems to be difficult and extremely confusing. However, they are meant to be closely interpreted and annotated until the deeper meaning is…
I have been writing some assignments in which I had to include poetry, logos, pathos, ethos and many more during this school year. It has taught me how to use each one of them in different ways. During this school year I read a poem which is written by Emily Dickinson and it taught me how poetry is written and it also carries a meaning or an hidden message, also an expression or thought that the person feels. For example, in one of her poems “hope” she uses an example of a bird or a angel to express her thought or feelings and how it can destroy you in a quick instant, but it can also help without expecting anything from you.…
What is poetry? A variety of answers are likely to emerge when you ask this question. According to Merriam Webster, poetry is defined as, “Metrical writing; writing that formulates a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience in language chosen and arranged to create a specific emotional response through meaning, sound, and rhythm.” An author can have a set purpose of writing something, but everyone interprets readings differently. Any work, in which the speaker is telling a story that evokes emotion from its reader; the writing does not have to any set, specific emotion that the reader is supposed to feel, a change in wording or style of writing can cause someone to look at that section different; that is what poetry is to me.…
I chose to read and analyze the poem titled “For the Sleepwalkers” written by Edward Hirsch and the poem conveyed a theme of recognition in the sense of gratitude towards individuals who can have confidence in themselves. The speaker is conveying a sense of gratitude towards those who can follow through with something without being aware of the direct outcome, they choose to live their lives according to adventure and not let their mind and irrational fears hinder their experiences in which they endure. They can live a dual life where they accomplish their responsibilities without depriving them of the qualities of life. In today’s society, a great deal of people often spend so much of their time trying to survive, that they forget to live.…
Symbolism and Personification in Poetry Poetry in some way, shape or form, gives realistic ideas to even objects that reflect upon an everyday part of life by using symbolism and personification. When reviewing “Divorce” by Billy Collins the cutlery is personified and distinctively used throughout the whole short poem as (come back to this). In chapter four, Johnson and Arp tells the reader “Personification consists of giving the attributes of a human being to an animal, an object, or a concept”(797). Primarily the whole idea around personification is for the reader to visualize what the reading is trying to create an image of and understand why and how human attributes are given to non human things.…
Those who have identified with the poem become both reader and speaker, the “me” in the poem. In this dual position they will notice the unnoticed and in turn be noticed. This operation of noticing and being noticed forms a community of connectedness based on shared experience: “You” have been lost but are now found and…
Edward Hirsch recently gave a presentation at Aquinas College and went over a few of his poems and talked to the audience about himself and his poetry. Having Edward for our next new candidate would be a great twist on season 20 of The Bachelor. Although he is rather different from the usual handsome and fit guys that are typically on The Bachelor, this twist is exactly what The Bachelor needs. The Bachelor usually picks men that are young, good-looking, well-known, and are seeking a woman for a relationship. The Bachelor intrigues people who watch it because of the handsome men and how they choose a partner from the show.…
My interpretation of what poetry is most likely the same as what anyone else it is thinking; whatever the poet at the time wants it to be. Poetry is open to anything. It can express anger, happiness, hatred, fear, love, passion, joy and any other form of expressions known to man. Before this assignment I was not big on poetry outside of when it was required to read in school. I decided on the poem “To Change the World Enough” by Alice Walker, mainly because I was able to understand most of what the poem was saying.…
Poetry is a very beautiful and unique form of literature, but it often is given a bad reputation. The main reason being is people overanalyze it, instead of taking in the beauty of it. Billy Collins’s poem “Introduction of Poetry” explains how people overanalyze and take away from the beauty of a poem. The speaker suggests ways of reading poetry that allow the reader to understand the poem, but not take away from the beauty of it. Billy Collins quotes “I ask them to take a poem / and hold it up to the light / like a color slide” (lines 1-3) meaning take the poem that is being read and analyze it, but do not analyze it to the point you loose sight of the beauty or “colors”.…
Literature Paper Poetry can be very complex and even though it can vary and use different techniques to get the point across it may come to the same conclusion and meaning, and can also be interpreted differently. Poetry is meant to be understood in the reader's own way. Why I Hate Raisins, Hand-Me-Down Halloween, and My Brother at 3AM are about the struggles of living in the reservation, but use different style, syntax and tone. Why I Hate Raisins is a poem about the struggles of not having enough food or not being able to afford food other than what they received. It is written in subtly and sounds simple, so the true meaning behind the poem is not really understood until the end, and has a deeper meaning.…
Everyone gets something different when they read poems. What a poems means to me is not the same as what it means to you. Something all the poems have in common is the narrators are all male, but something they all have that’s different is the narrators are all different types of people. To begin, in poem one “Song of myself” by Walt Whitman, the narrator is down to Earth, he wants to live life to the fullest, he is very hippyish, he is connected to the Earth. In the second poem “ A noiseless patient spider” also by Whitman, the narrator is patient and observant.…
To humans, the most essential part to living is communicating. We connect to one another through ways of expression such as music or literature. Poetry as a form of writing is a way to express feelings through rhythm and the use of specific words. In every poem, the author conveys a certain topic or emotion to the reader. The use of language, metaphors, and recurring themes is essential to the poet in sending the right message.…
Poetry is a means of human expression that exists because there are readers and writers who are involved and engaged in human experience. This essay will discuss the mariners experience about creation of god and his expressions towards it. “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge reveals the importance of God’s creations and the appreciation individual ought to have for them, no matter how small or great.…
Have you ever contemplated that something may be so close yet so far? As such saying that goes by, “Good from far, far from good.” Truth be told, this is in fact in unity with what is Poetry and the Visual Arts. Therefore, the two are something that you can value, you can feel within yourself and understand more than life itself even if you don 't have it at arm 's length. Poetry could have its many controversies and its meanings between being deep, life touching, mind consuming and realistic.…
