“Beggars sit and lie along the walls and the sight of people collapsing from starvation is common,” (Friedlander 205), this quote comes from the book Nazi Germany and Jews, 1933-1945; the author discusses the devastating state in which the victims encountered, such as marches to certain camps without the presence of food or water, and being forced to strip bare whenever they were commanded. The painter, David, had seen these incidents, because of his occupation at the gas chambers, so as a witness to the struggle of these innocent people who had been put to their death, he demonstrated the concavity of their stomachs as well as each individual bone only being covered by a small layer of skin. In the book, Night, the author who survived the holocaust, even indirectly described the incurvate organs in the quote: “I was a body. Perhaps less than that even: a starved stomach,” (Wiesel 50). Throughout Night, the author Elie writes in depth about his experiences in the death camps. These were occurrences such as fighting for small amounts of bread, which led to the point of multiple deaths, to running an endless number of miles, in severe weather conditions. Millions were executed by shootings, gassings, torture, and of course many also died from infections and diseases. After the war was finally put to a halt, individuals began to paint, write literature, sculpt, and various other items to describe the horrid images that occurred through this time period. Some of these concepts were not always positive reactions in the eye of the population, such as the movie Life is Beautiful, which is placed in the comedy category even though it’s about the life of a victim of the holocaust.
