In this essay I will be examining the Casey Thayer’s “The Hurt Sonnet” and determine how the speaker copes with the loss in their life. In the poem it would appear that the speaker in the speaker has not lost a loved one but the loved has lost apart of himself; this is due to war. He has loss body appendages and mental integrity. In the poem the speaker yearns to release their love from his prison that is the scars and memories of war, and replace them by bringing new meaning to his life and allowing the pains of the scars and memories to become minuscule.
The reason I believe that the speaker wishes to revitalize their lover is because they state that “If only I could strip off the black map …show more content…
Well we see in the poem that the man has many tattoos he uses these to relieve his agonize pain from war, we see this when the speaker states “a white cross for the men he didn’t miss.” (8). Therefor the man has been trying to fix his problems with a frivolous manner of ways. In the poem we see a moment were the speaker does not agree with reasoning behind their lover having the tattoos when they say “He won’t leave the long tale his tattoos read / for me, so I amend the story” (13-14). We can look back at that quote and see precisely how they wish to remedy their lovers war torn scars. To do this they want to make those scars and memories into something completely deferent. These tattoos that keep reminding him of the war, men he lost, and limbs he no longer has are keeping him in a cloudy room. In this cloudy room he has nothing but him, his memories, and his scars to hold on to. However, the speaker wishes to open the door to the cloudy room their lover is in and allow the light of their new memories together to replace, or more so rectify and add new meaning to his scars and memories; and thus clear the cloudy room into a transparent paradise of
