What are the most important parts of a novel? Is it the title? Is it the characters? These questions have plagued authors for eons. The Heart is a Lonely Hunter is a novel written by Carson McCullers, published in the 1940 's. The story takes place in southern America during The Great Depression. Within the novel, important aspects to have are strong lead characters, an interesting plot, and a captivating title. However, the most important aspects of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter are its characterization, structure, and the tone of the novel.

Throughout the novel each chapter is narrated by a different main character. Readers are given access to the character 's thoughts and motives with some narration in between. While one character is narrating, what the other characters are thinking is unknown. This forces the reader to piece together information about what a character is like from many different perspectives. Another way McCullers helps the reader to understand what a character is like is by writing the chapter in the style that the character would speak and think. For example, Mick Kelly 's chapters are full of adolescence and youth. Music is mentioned often and many sentences are run-on. This helps the reader to picture that Mick is invested in her music and very busy minded. Another example is Mr. Singer. The novel revolves around Mr. Singer and his chapters are mainly the other main characters asking for advice. His chapter style is very calm and collected, showing control and level headedness within his character. By writing her chapters this way Carson McCullers gives the novel many different
