This book isn't for everyone, but it does shine a light a sensitive topic people tend to avoid. In a subliminal tone, Ellen Hopkins explores the topic of sexual abuse and all the subconscious problems that it causes in the long run.
The book's main idea to me is to show the problems survivors of sexual abuse have to endure, both consciously and subconsciously. Of course, depending on the reader's views on many different topics, the main idea may vary to them. Some people believe the main idea is that secrets are dangerous, the longer you let them bottle up, they more dangerous the explosive of feelings will be. At the beginning of the book, we are introduced to the two main characters, Reanne and Kaeleigh. Right away, we are being told about the problems they go through, some indirect and others incredibly direct. Although he is highly praised, their father is a drunk. After being the cause of a terrible car accident, he buried himself in alcohol and their mother buried herself in her work. She started to have much overtime as she could, being away from her husband any chance she got. She worked so hard, that was able to be elected a part of Congress, which is the election she is being a part of in the story. We soon find out that the twins also threw themselves into the
