Analysis Of A Video: Speaking To One Or One Thousand

The video entitled Speaking to One or One Thousand provided many useful tips for public speaking. The four factors discussed in this video are all relatable and easy to fall victim to. Preparing for a speech can be stressful on its own, but remembering to focus on the four factors, mental, visual, vocal and verbal, can be extremely beneficial in the end.

Mental preparation for a public speech is most definitely the most challenging of the four components. Overcoming your demons within yourself is always a tricky task to accomplish, but having to take on yourself in front of other people can be even more frightening. For example, reminding yourself the speech will only last a short amount of time and preparing and reviewing your outline plenty of time in advanced can help eliminate the stress of the mental pressure of public speaking. Sitting and visualizing, clearing your mind, and rewarding yourself are all positive and effective ways to prepare mentally for a public speech.

Making sure you have chosen an appropriate outfit for the type of speech, location of your speech, and audience for your speech is important. Imagine interviewing multiple candidates for a multi-million dollar company. You would remember the one person who showed up in ripped jeans and a t-shirt just as well as the person who delivered ideas that could change the future of your company, but not in a good way. The person in ripped jeans and a t-shirt would stick out in your mind as being unprepared, unprofessional, and undetermined to make a difference and you would automatically disregard them as a desirable candidate. With this being said, the vocal component of one’s speech is just as critical as appearance and

On my demonstrative speech called “How to Play a Guitar,” I pull out different topics related with the instrument like the parts of the guitar, music theory, and the diverse skills playing it. For instance, I spend several weeks figuring out my theme. At the end I found this topic, but like was little late I spent more time in some areas than others ones. One of that well developed areas was my attention getter; was strong enough to hook the people. But, for future speeches maybe using a real guitar or pre-recording music, because it would impact my audience in a different way.…

I would consider myself moderately anxious about public speaking. I remember the first few communication apprehensions I experienced in my personal and work life. With my personal experience, I was at church when I shared a testimony with the bible study. With my work encounter, I had to conduct status updates for two areas during project implementations and testing phases with a large group. In both situations, my heart pounded loudly right before I spoke and when the words came out of my mouth, I felt like I had to speak quickly like Speedy Gonzalez!…

To be honest I was never a good public speaker there are times I avoid public speaking there are certain fears I had such as tongue tied, forgetting my lines, the awkward silence when I try to make a joke or point and by being myself blurting out words like "stuff" or "shit" unconsciously. I know it's so unprofessional but it happened quite a few times. After speaking in public I kinda dwell on what I said something that bothered me or that was unsaid.…

One of thing things A Pocket Guide to Public Speaking talks about that I want to draw from going forward is forming a specific speech purpose. “Ask yourself: What do you want the audience to learn/do/reconsider/agree with?” (Page 50). This is an idea that I want to keep in mind a lot more before I start writing my speeches. By being able to pinpoint my intentions I believe I will be more effective in making audience laugh or making them consider a certain idea, etc.…

In my commemorative speech I was able to commemorate my uncle, Robin Speedie. As I was looking through my speech video cast I noticed strengths and areas I could improve in. My strengths in my speech are: (1) My body language. I moved around the room, not staying in the same position. Also, moving my hands while giving my speech and making a connection with the audience by laughing at my own stories and showing eye contact to the audience.…

Do you want to know why i'm here today, well i´m here to tell you what I learned from speaking and listening this quarter. The first thing I learned was, if you fidget with something the speaker will get distracted, The second thing I learned was, if the speaker is messing with the podium then the listeners will probably get distracted, The last thing I learned was, the first word is the hardest part of the speech. Point one, if you fidget with something the speaker will get distracted. If you're fidgeting with something, then the speaker will probably look at you and get distracted. If you are messing with something like a fidget spinner, which you shouldn't be, and you drop it, the fidget spinner might hit something metal and make a loud…

Delivering the Pet Peeve speech was on the whole a relaxed and enjoyable experience. When the assignment was first issued, I felt a bit reluctant to deliver the speech; I’m only friends with a handful of students in the class, and probably disliked by the rest, so I couldn’t be confident in having a receptive audience. Due to my previous experience public speaking during coffee houses however, my apprehension was easily surmountable. I believe these types of opportunities to perform in front of a crowd on a limited scale are an excellent skill builder for affairs later in life, be it an impromptu toast at a dinner party, or reciting your wedding vows. As far as preparation goes, my approach was casual: I practiced delivering my speech two or three times on a timer, doing my best to fall within 10 seconds of the 3 minute mark.…

When creating my informative speech, I had decided to go back and reread Chapter 11 in the textbook. This helped me to decide on what the speech should include and how it should be organized. Also, I decided to keep the speech brief, but include all the required information as to not sound like I was rambling on. Before I delivered my speech, I decided to go online and watch a few videos on public speaking and speech presentation. This helped to give me an idea on how I should speak and present my speech.…

Practice makes perfect as everyone has heard this saying before. In the future, I plan on practicing my speeches more by speaking in front of a mirror over and over again to give myself the impression of what I look like when speaking in front of a group of people. Practicing in front of a mirror over and over again will also help me memorize my speech more instead of relying on my note card as often, giving me more confidence while speaking. I tend to use my note card as a comforting thing when I get nervous and forget what I am about to say. It gives me the chance to collect my thoughts and remember what I was going to say as well as staying on track of where I was going in my speech.…

My informative speech was about the history of cameras. My original idea was to do how to take a good selfie, but half way into doing research about it, I realized that it was super hard to find different tips and information about how to take a good selfie. Most of the information I found was the same so I got the idea about the history of cameras because I had a couple really old cameras at home. I did really enjoy finding out about cameras and how they became a thing. I also thought about cameras because I thought about what things I enjoyed doing…

I sometimes get nervous about what people are thinking about my speech when I am giving it but if I don’t judge people from the audience then I will have the mindset when I am on stage that people from the audience are not judging me. Lastly, I think that I will be able to get up in front of people and give a speech without getting extremely nervous. I haven’t had much experience with speaking in front of big groups but hopefully by the end of this semester I will be very good at it without having any nervous feelings if someone asked me to give a public…
