As a reader, when first reading this Horatian satirical excerpt one can become completely baffled. That is exactly how the author wants you to feel. The author targets some of the most ignorant of society; valley dialected, uneducated, inadequate, pathetic juveniles or as we courteously call them to their faces, high school teenagers. The author’s teenagers express their ignorance through a great folly, by filing the complaint that they do not “know as much geography as [their] parents and grandparents,” and that they are also failing their geography classes due to the militaries idiotic choices of fighting wars in insignificant countries. To target this group, the author uses an exaggerated diction of the “valley girl” dialect and jargon which majority of the United State’s teens use. The author attacks this group of overusing “crutch words” such as; like, so, and totally, to sculpt improper sentences that are realistic to embarrass any reader who is guilty of such half-baked vocabulary. The students are even so foolish to complain about the location in which our militaries are now fighting in, because it is not teaching the students enough geography. This view is completely insensitive to the whole circumstance of war, because people are not fighting and dying thousands of miles away from home, just to teach students about geography. These claims are so comical and ridiculous within in this writing that one could only pray in reality someone would never make the mistake of getting Macedonia and Massachusetts confused with one another. However, one cannot blame these poor children for their incompetence due to the pathetic teachers they have. The author claims these teachers “supported” the students claims, and when the reader sees someone agreeing with such foolishness one can only conclude the teacher’s are just as idiotic themselves.
