Sherry Turkle's Alone Together

Since social media became a popular platform for learning, sharing, and posting online, some speculate that the world we live in is becoming more interconnected while others believe that the invention that revolutionized how we communicate is rather making each one of us more alone.
Social media like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and many others aim at making the world more connected by creating online social utilities that allow people with internet access to share things and get information about other people’s interests, whereabouts, “likes,” and activities. But the idealistic aim is often different than the real role of social media in our daily lives.
The most common way of socializing is through smartphones which most people seem to possess.

But the phone-obsessed generation is facing many new challenges. When the individual becomes a user, when a nice memorable photo becomes an “instapic”, and when a deep thought becomes a hashtag, the world is doomed to realize the major effects of social media on all life’s aspects.
“Alone Together” is a book by author and psychologist Sherry Turkle, that explores the ways social media is changing how people relate to each other and to their society. Her research is based on many interviews with children and adults as well as analyses of individual and family studies concerning the time spent connecting online and its consequences on the person’s mental and social health.
In an interview for The Monitor in 2011, Turkle said that when we are able to mentally “leave” at any time, and when we can run away from our problems and hardships with others simply through connecting to social media or anything else on our phones, we go through the “most dramatic change.” (Price, 2011) Turkle also gave the simple example of 15-year-olds when they get together for a birthday bash. As it is well-known for anyone who has been 15, she said, there comes a time at these events when attendees would want to go home. The situation becomes a bit awkward, but everyone should learn to get along and make things better to enjoy the party. However, nowadays, whenever teens get bored or feel the desire to leave,

A lot of unfortunate things occur between people when they shift from having different feelings and calling someone else to wanting to have a feeling and becoming satisfied by just sending that someone a text message. In this case, people are negatively affected, and their relationships fall apart, because instead of finding consolation in others, they start to see them as objects and constantly need them to feel complete, when they actually can’t perceive them as full and different individuals. Others become a temporary solution or a missing part of our weak being and delicate self. Therefore, it’s psychologically true that “if we don’t teach our children how to be alone, they will always be lonely,” she said. (Price, 2011)
One of the online campaigns about quitting social media is a video that ironically went viral. (Withnall, 2014) Some people found it overdramatized while others thought it was brilliant. The 5-minute spoken word film, named “Look Up,” urged people to stop their blind attachment to social media and benefit from every moment. It featured a man, Gary Turk, reciting his poem, with a set of clips from different social occasions playing along. The following is one of the verses that stress the need to live life

Multitasking has been proven to be ineffective in many cases. Russell Poldrack went so far as to say it “changes the way people learn” making a person’s new knowledge “less flexible and more specialized” (qtd. in Rosen 376) . The term effective, however, is used very loosely, largely depending on which exact process you wish to be effective.…

In Sherry Turkle’s chapters “Empathy Diaries” and “The Flight from Conversation,” Turkle argues that Social Media is stopping our generation from having conversations with one another, losing one of the main things that makes humans, human. The idea of conversation being lost with technology that was created initially to make it easier to have conversation with those far distance away but it has become an excuse for not talking to those around you . I agree that nothing within society can get away without being changed by social media. What is on your personal Social Media account can determine whether if you get the job or lose it. A Rhetorical Analysis of "The Flight from Conversation" In my analysis, I will focus on the article "The Flight from Conversation" by Sherry Turkle published in the New York Times Magazine in April 2012. In this article, Turkle explains the consequences of being constantly connected via technology, gives specific examples to help the reader understand difficult concepts, and explores the differences between conversation and communication. The first claim that Turkle makes is that people now are not content being alone because they are used to being constantly connected.…

Ms. Turkle has several theories, such as connection and the immediate need of people to connect. People don’t always have time for each other in person, but only in social media or online. Text driven social media does not allow people or teenagers nowadays to find time to help them discover themselves or their identity and values. Social media keeps today’s teens tethered to their phones and applications. Teenagers need to have separation and have time to be themselves.…

Let’s Talk”, Turkle explores the implications that social media and mobile phone usage has on youth. Turkle’s overarching thesis is that the quality of interaction has declined as a result of mobile phone usage. She cites a study by the University of Michigan in which she explains college students have had “a 40 percent decline in empathy” over a 30 year period with “most of the decline taking place after 2000” (Turkle 7). Turkle shows how innovations like Facebook have made it easier for us to escape into a virtual reality, one without the discomforts of pauses in conversation, awkward subject matters, difficult realities, and as a result, meaningful connection which strengthens our emotional intelligence. Not only are students becoming more disconnected from each other, but we are becoming more isolated from ourselves as well.…

People no longer feel the need to have a face-to-face conversation with others because they have already “stalked” them on social media accounts. In Turkle’s Ted Talk “Connected, but alone”, she states that people fear a real conversation because “it takes place in real time and you can’t control what you are going to say.” People are afraid of the unknown; they want to be in control at all times. They do not want to deal with the uncertainties that a real relationship holds because technology takes half the work out of a real relationship. People can learn about members in their community at their own free will, which leads to the disconnection of a community.…

Social Media has been an integral part of everyday life for almost 10 years. Many people have grown accustom to it and have forgotten what life was like before it existed. Social media has such a large impact that one simple post can change a person’s perspective. “Social media…shows clearly that the ‘meaning’ or ‘effect’ of digital technologies is formed through the practices in which they are used and the social relations and institutions that develop around them” (Lövheim, Jansson, Paasonen &Sumiala, 2013). If there is no face to face communication between people, it does not mean that communication will not take place. The platform that the social media provides is so wide to the extent people can even send video messages and even hold video conversations through social networks like Skype.
