Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), primarily referred to as anabolic steroids, are synthetic variants of the male sex hormone testosterone that are either taken orally or injected into the muscles, or applied to the skin as a cream or gel. Anabolic steroids induce the protein synthesis in cellular tissues. This results in the buildup of cellular generations, especially in muscles, and in return can increase the strength and body weight in athletes (Zomorodian K et al. 3). Many people that are involved in bodybuilding, professional sports, and olympic athletics take these steroids to develop massive muscle growth in order to excel in their given sport. Today, it is estimated that one to three million people has abused anabolic steroids in the United States, which is higher than it has ever been (Zomorodian, K., et al.).
