Bildungsroman Research Paper

Growing up in a very large country, with a very small population, and only two neighbours, as a child, I was always wondering and deeply interested in knowing how the children from the other countries are growing up. I always wanted to know how do they spend their free time, how their puberty goes, which experiences do they have, how do they communicate with their parents, what do they eat, drink, think, read, dream, feel, how do they see the world, are their experiences similar to my own or not. However, at that time, an electronic medium was not so popular like today; only access to the world was literature. To these questions answered mostly the novels of someone’s development. In their opinion, the genre’s life is over and “the goals of such a text are naive” (Karafilis 63). Others consider that there is any Bildungsroman written in English. However, it still remains one of the most successful in the literary studies worldwide. Known for its early characteristics of being male, middle-class, white, and European, the Bildungsroman has undergone transformations, in different periods. Since the late twentieth century, the construction of the Bildungsroman genre has been changing with the new cultural, social and gender roles. Women writers and their counterparts, female authors of colour, reconstructed the traditional markers of the Bildungsroman and employed the traditional form to portray the development of female, black female, oppressed and colonized subjects. As a result, today, the Bildungsroman embodies the development experiences of males and females, Blacks and Whites, gays and lesbians, upper- and working-class, European and other people worldwide.
