'An Analysis Of The Socialist Alternative'

Our organization, the Bipartisan Solution, opposes both rightist and leftist extremism and advocates for the use of existing governmental institutions to negotiate solutions to contentious political points, a message that has only become more significant after the extremely divisive election of Donald Trump. The Socialist Alternative is a Democratic socialist political party that organized an anti-Trump protest in Oakland the day after Election Day. News reports estimate that seven thousand people attended the protest (Hollyfield, 2016). The composition of the crowd, if the area in my immediate eyesight was representative, consisted mostly of young people who appeared to be between ages eighteen and thirty. A small portion of the crowd appeared to be over thirty, and some parents carried their young children on their shoulders. They criticized some of the most contentious points of Trump’s political platform, and called for a collective imagination of a different sort of future, one in which the “people ruled,” a statement that undoubtedly resonated with the crowd that had gathered on the streets to express their individual opinions collectively in a collective manner. The strength of the event as a whole lied in the activation and organization of individuals for societal change, a sentiment that the Bipartisan Solution does not currently draw from its audience.
