The overall purpose of this lab was to determine what kind of meats were present inside of Taco Bell’s sausage crumbles and to find out if there was any misleading labeling in the popular product. Our hypothesis was that we would find various types of meat present in the sausage such as pork, beef, and chicken. Our results supported our hypothesis. According to our data, the sausage was composed of pork or pig that came from the Sus genus. There was no other type of animal present in the sausage other than pig.…
In 1981, George Streisinger and his colleagues began to use zebrafish as a model organism for research. Since then, they have become a popular model organism for biomedical research. Zebrafish primarily have been used to study vertebrate development, evolution, genetics, and disease. Zebrafish are popular as pets and genetically modified, glow-in-the-dark zebrafish have been developed for the aquaria trade as well. Zebrafish have many attributes that make it a popular model organism for biomedical research.…
Compensation is the maintenance of the levels of physiological processes, despite changes in temperature. This experiment was coordinated to determine whether crayfish will show metabolic compensation when acclimated to various temperatures. The findings of this study show that temperature had no effect on crayfish oxygen consumption. The oxygen consumption for both the warm and cold acclimated crayfish was almost the same, despite the opposite direction of the temperature change. The results of this study therefore support the hypothesis.…
The founder effect offers a potential explanation for the significantly higher observed heterozygosity of the Collins Creek over the pond Redbelly Dace populations. The migration of the fish to the isolated pond could have been accomplished through an anomalous transport of eggs on waterfowl or other animals travelling between the two water bodies; the small group of migrants would in turn be genetically unrepresentative of the original creek population. The disequilibrium of the Hardy-Weinberg proportions, generalized as (p1 + … + pn)2 =1, pn representing the allele frequency if a particular locus is polymorphic (as in the case of microsatellites), indicates the presence of an evolutionary force influencing the decrease in the frequency of heterozygosity of the pond population. The founder effect would result in disequilibrium…
Biology 201 B1 Assignment #2 A four question analysis on "The myosin-interacting protein SMYD1 is essential for sarcomere organization" by Just et al. (2011) 1.) Wild-type Fla Mutant (SMYD-deficient) In the current study, the authors used a zebra fish mutant known as Flatline (fla). This mutant contains a nonsense mutation within the SMYD1 gene, consequently, these mutants show disturbed sarcomere assembly.…
The invasive effects of Dreissena polymorpha on native mussels within the Great Lakes region The Great Lakes area once supported an abundant number of freshwater mussels (Mollusca: Unionacea). The invasion of Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) has decimated these populations, by outcompeting native mussels in dispersal rates, and reproduction, due to enhanced survival mechanisms. Understanding the mechanisms that have allowed Zebra mussels to out complete native fresh water mussels, will provide insight into possible mechanisms that can stop the spread of Zebra mussels, and help with the survival of native mussels. Griffiths et al. conducted length-frequency analysis of the Zebra mussel population, before 1988 (prediscovery) and between…
There are many biotic factors that are being impacted in the lake’s ecosystem. However, the most affected animals include the crayfish, clams, and mayfly. Crayfish need calcium in order to maintain a healthy exoskeleton. However, when a lake’s pH decreases, most of the minerals diminish as well. Affecting the crayfish in the process as they are weak and their source of food is being limited as well.…
It sounds like a subplot to the next Deadpool movie, but alas, it is the truth. As you may know, there is said to be a difference between farmed salmon and that caught in the wild. What may not have been understood was just how different the two types were. It goes far beyond being raised on a farm versus being raised in the wild. DNA is involved, and it might make you think twice before you buy farmed salmon.…
When people think of the word catfish, the first thing that probably comes to mind is a fish with barbells that dwells at the bottom of murky waters. On MTV, a Catfish is someone who uses social media to create a fake online persona, in hopes of pursuing a romantic relationship. The reality show Catfish itself is actually based on the 2010 film Catfish, involving a man and a woman who develop a romantic relationship via Facebook. When they finally met in person, the young man Nev, soon realizes that he was a catfishee, instead of someone who had found his true love. His brother filmed the whole documentary, with no idea that it would soon become a success.…

Friend, or just a food giver? Imagine you have had your pet since he was little, you brought him home, fed him, trained him, and took care of him, you and your pet have bonded. Now imagine years later your pet turns and bites you and starts attacking you. People who train animals know this routine all too well.…
Atlantic Salmon Fishing Fishing Atlantic salmon is not like catching trout. A trout will feed day or night and when it so desires whereas the Atlantic salmon has come from the ocean strong and fat, but has not come to feed. It has come to spawn. The male joins up with the female, to create more future salmon. A place is selected in the river and becomes the nesting area.…
Out of the three school i researched my first choice would be CSU Channel Islands, then CSU Northridge and finally Los Angeles Trade- Technical College. CSUCI would be my first choice because they are near the beach and i will have many opportunities to examine different kinds of fish first hand. Also i want to experience what it's like living without my parents because it's something that will happen eventually and it's better if im already used to living alone or with roommates.…
Coincidentally, love and judgement come in a variety of forms. Society has set ‘standards’ on people, on the way they look and act. For example, there could be two odd-looking people who are in a relationship. Some may say “Why are they together? They do not look good together,” or create unnecessary rumors and assumptions.…
