Amethyst- A treasurable stone consisting of a violet or purple variety of quartz. These gems were once believed to have magical qualities, and were supposed to contain the power to prevent or cure drunkenness to its wearer. This was perhaps believed to avoid drunkenness due to its wine-like color. People would wear rings made out of amethyst before or during drinking. In Latin around 1250-1300 A.D. this was referred to as ‘amethystus’. This comes from the prefix a-, meaning "not," and methys "to be drunk." The Greeks, around 1250-1300 A.D. gave it the name ‘amethystos’. a =not, methus= to intoxicate, tos- common Greek suffix. In Europe around 1400 A.D., the word ‘amethyste’ was used for the French, and ‘ametist’ for Middle English. a= not, methyskein= wine or drunk. Uses of the gemstone throughout history have been to prevent intoxication, for decoration as a gemstone, a good luck charm, and to preserve sanity. Deriving from the color of the gem, it can also be used to describe a violet or purple color.
