American Tet Character Analysis

In American Tet, Lydia Stryk established several rules that created this play world. The rules I’m talking about revolve around Elaine, Jim, Danny and sometimes Amy. Technically, I see the “rules” as one rule but it differs for each character. Throughout the play, these characters speak without another character present as if they’re communicating with the audience. Each scene with this rule or device intrigued me, especially the manner in which the scenes are structured.
For Elaine, her scenes depict her teaching others how to respond to a loved one entering the army. Not only how to respond, but how to cope with this reality every day. Both, Elaine and Danny’s scenes of this nature, have them conversing with “someone” directly. While Jim
