American Symphony Orchestr Concert Report

The first piece performed by the American Symphony Orchestra was “Alleluia” by Randall Thompson. “Alleluia” was performed by a cappella chorus and lasted approximately 6 minutes with no instruments involved. There was a large chorus dressed in black; the men had on bow ties and suits. The Chorus sung perfectly and in sync together with the conductor’s moves. As the conductor would make his gestures the chorus would follow and move their heads with the tone of their voices. The chorus increased their voices and pitch as the conductor raised his wand. The piece by Randall Thompson kept an Adagio tempo with a quadruple meter throughout the piece with a sudden increase in pitch towards the middle of the piece. The performance of this piece was conducted by Leon Botstein and included the use of the following instruments: 3 flutes, 1 piccolo, 2 oboes, 1 English horn, 2 clarinets, 1 bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 1 contrabassoon, 4 French horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, percussion, 1 piano, 1 celesta, 22 violins, 8 violas, 8 cellos, 6 double basses, and solo cello. The performance lasted approximately 19 minutes. The piece transitions between adagio and andante and the violin stands out as you can hear the other instruments in the background. A triple meter can be heard throughout the piece transitioning between duple and triple throughout the piece with a piano dynamic. A moderately low pitch is kept throughout the piece with sudden increases, ending very peaceful with a largo tempo, which gives you the feeling as if you were watching a horror film.
