With politics in high dispute between Americans, the timing of this song was golden for expressing government concerns. In an article regarding the effects of the song states “The political environment captured in American Idiot continues to guide millennial political engagement today” (Wang 2014). The rebellious, free thinking vibe of this song appealed to millennials because times are changing and younger people want the government to represent them, not represent ideas from past generations. In V for Vendetta, this desired change from the younger generation can be seen through one of the scenes. Many people began wearing the same mask as V, representing the same resistance. About half way through the movie, a young girl was seen spray painting the side of a building while wearing this mask and was shown being brutally shot as she tries to run from the man holding a gun, who reveals himself as a policeman. The use of this scene most definitely starts a fire with the younger generation because they become scared this could happen to them as well. Following this horrifying scene, riots begin and more and more people demand a change of government. Throughout the video, an American flag is flipped upside down behind the band. This interesting prop was used to symbol the country being in distress. The massive size of the flag represents the status and power of America, a main focus on the role of government. Using these types of props in the video lets the viewer connect the lyrics to what problems Green Day has with America. One of the most important visionaries in V for Vendetta is the v inside of a circle. This symbol is used by V himself and becomes the sign of their revolution. The visionary comes from the anarchism symbol, representing V’s rise against anarchy. It becomes widely known and used by people wanting change throughout the movie. Without these visionaries placed in both sources, expressing defiance to government would have been much more difficult and could leave some people
