We were taught as kids to recite and stand up for the National Anthem on every Friday at school, face the flag and put your hand over your heart. As kids we were taught to stand up and to respect the country we live in, and to honor the soldiers that gave up their lives and freedom for ours. America is a patriotic and discimiatory country, full of people who devote and support their country one hundred percent. As Americans, we take pride in the country we live in, with people wanting to live here too. We as humans are raised with full freedom, and with constitutional rights that allow us to speak and voice our own opinions, as long as we live just like in this case Colin Kaerpernick. These two symbols are what soldiers believe in for America, and give up their own freedom and lives for ours. Our American flag was first presented in May of 1776, and our Congress adopted the stars and stripes as the American flag on June 14th, 1777. (CITE) As Americans, we take pride in the whole flag from the shape to the colors. The red stripes on our flag represents and symbolizes Hardiness and Valor, as white symbolizes purity and innocence. The blue corner of our flag represents vigilance, perserverance, and justice. Lastly, the stars represents all of our 50 states that make America a whole. (CITE ALL!!) With these meanings spread across the flag, and with such discrimination in our country, Kaepernick stands up for the wrongfulness of what is going on. Sometimes when people stand up for what they believe in, the opinions go half and half. Some people are with Kaepernick and some are against. The people that are with Kaepernick believe he is doing the right by standing up for what he thinks, but others feel as if he is disgracing America and the soldiers that fought for freedom. When soldiers and veterans got asked their thoughts on Kaepernick’s movement most of them took Kaepernick’s side for his act of action. When Tom Baker, a navy veteran who served in Iraq was asked his thoughts on Kaepernick’s actions and if he was disgracing the soldiers who served and gave their lives for America, he had said “Colin sat down and exercised his right to protest, which is something that I feel like we all swore an oath to defend.” (CITE VERTERAN ARTICLE) Tom baker had also mentioned “We don’t respect the rights of black and brown people.” (VETERAN ARTICLE CITE) A second veteran that served in the Iraq war, Justin Wood, also had said “I don’t see this as a disrespectful towards our country or the flag.
