Like Inas Says, “When I see the Jewish girls as individuals, I love them… But when I remember they are Jewish, I have my feelings at the same time”. (Gossels) If Inas can see them as individuals, she enjoys their company, and even loves them. But when she remembers what they are, a label that the world gave them, her hate of the Jewish mixes with her love of the girls. Similarly, Gal says “My friendship with Rezan is one of the most important things for me in the world, and I’m afraid something like their army is going to conquer it, and I’m going to the enemy’s army, I’m going to wear this uniform every day, same uniform she sees in every checkpoint.” (Gossels) Gal going into the army is something she fears will tear away her relationship with Rezan, because she fear Rezan’s hate of the army will overcome her love for Gal. As Allen says, “The American flag is a cherished symbol of our national aspirations. It is the closest thing to a national symbol, rivaled only by the Constitution and the Declaration of Independance”. (Allen 10-12) The American Flag is an important and powerful symbol of America, cherished by the entire nation, and several other nations besides, which almost no one would dare desecrate. However, in the name of political protest, someone did, causing a national uproar and heading to the Supreme Court, where it was ultimately decided that the flag burning was allowed by the constitution. One of the most important things to an American is freedom of speech, “It is, thus, no surprise that the First Amendment is where it is in the Bill of Rights, for it is first in importance”.
