Scientifically named as A. mississippiensis is at the top of the food chain as no other animal preys upon them except armed humans. They inhabit in fresh water swamps, marshes, river, lakes and canals. Can be found throughout the southeastern United States from the coastal swamps of North and South Carolina, throughout Florida and west to Texas.
They provide an important role in the food chain as they not only do prevent overpopulation of certain prey species in their environment
