Elementary Children Independence in America vs Elementary Children Independence in Japan Most children in America depend on the adults to do almost everything for them, but Japan is very different because children are nearly always seen doing things by themselves. Although there are many children in America that are very independent, the majority are not, especially children in elementary school. They learn how to do simple tasks but not much is expected of them because they are seen as being too young. Japanese elementary students are slightly more responsible because parents invigorate them to be more self-reliant. There are many similarities and

Some schools also make it mandatory for the children to go to school alone. In Japan it is not unusual to see elementary students walking or riding on the trains in groups or unaccompanied to school (Documentary looks at why Japanese parents let young kids walk to school by themselves). One reason why this is not uncommon is because this country has one of the lowest homicide rates in the world, less than one person is murdered for every 100,000 in the population, compared to 4.8 for the United States. This means that Japanese families are able to trust and feel confident that the children will be safe when going to school unaccompanied (Why Little Kids in Japan Are So …show more content…
Although the young American students have “clean-up time” but they usually only have to pick up small toys or small pieces of trash left on the ground. Older students in America are somewhat more responsible when it comes to cleaning up after themselves, but younger children do not grasp this idea. Elementary Japanese students though, do not have this luxury because there is a long tradition of students cleaning the schools themselves. Some schools also expect the elementary students to be unusually thorough when cleaning. In contrast, some Japanese schools do not require the children to clean up, but the majority of them do. Cleaning up will usually begin after lunchtime, where they will clean the entrance hall, classrooms, hallways, stairs, bathrooms, and the gym (YouTube). The Japanese believe that educating the students to clean the school will teach them to treat one another with respect and infuse a sense of

The walk from Windward to the dumpster seems miles away and walking with in one’s hand can make the walk even longer. Students do not take their trash out every day so eventually the trash begins to pile up. One reason students do not take trash out every day is because of the walk so they just wait until it is mandatory that they go. No one likes to touch trash because it is unsanitary. "All war is deception," (Sun Tzu). World War II deceived President Roosevelt and the american people into thinking that all Japanese-Americans citizens are spies which made them fear betrayal. For this reason, Roosevelt ordered the Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942, which issued the internment of Japanese-American citizens. The Americans subjected all of them to internment camps. Families were investigated, tried, and separated.…

Japanese were thought of as lesser people due to the facts they were ambitious. White Americans assumed the Japanese would take their jobs. Federal Law has limited Japanese rights before the attack on Pearl Harbor including immigration, citizenship, and voting. Japanese-Americans were interned in camps during WW2 because since we we fought with Japan, people worried the Japanese-American would be with the Japan and not with the United States. Also, the Americans were taking economic opportunities and jobs away from the American people.…

Starting in 1942, many Japanese-Canadians living near the British Columbia coast were relocated, and eventually put into internment camps, as Canadians believed if they were to be attacked by the Japanese, local residents would attempt to aid them. Despite the modern thoughts on the Japanese-Canadian internment, Canadians during World War II, specifically those living in British Columbia, believed that the Japanese deserved to be interned, as the majority of them felt unsafe with their presence. The Japanese-Canadian internment during World War II was not morally incorrect at the time because the government wanted to protect their people, the Japanese were viewed as evil, disloyal people by Canadian citizens and government, and the internment…

One of the actions of the federal government was they took all the Japanese American citizens from their home from any age to camps only because were of Japanese decent not because they committed a crime just because Japanese decent. One of the reason they relocated them is because of the attack of Pearl Harbor and the American citizens became fearful of the ethnic Japanese because some officials and citizens thought they were spy’s while that was happening more Japanese were settling near the west coast shortly near the end of the century. It also doesn’t matter if you’re born here in America but if they had Japanese decent they were automatically relocated. Also another thing is that they removed some of our freedom of speech during war…

Throughout history, people have always thrown each other under the bus for self preservation. From the start of America, the Salem Witch Trials, to the second World War, when anyone of japanese ancestry was accused of being allies to their home land, we have always feared what we do not know. When Pearl Harbor was bombed by Japan on December 7, 1941 anyone of any japanese background was immediately guilty by association, much like people were accused of being witches during the Salem Witch Trial (Jardins). During the witch trails anyone that could possibly be a witch was guilty and must repent (Miller). Rumors of anyone committing witchery immediately resulted in seclusion from society, as it was for the japanese in 1941 (Miller).…

The attack on Pearl Harbor took place on December 6th, 1941– 17 years after the Immigration Act of 1924– when Japanese fighter planes attacked American Naval bases in Honolulu, Hawaii (History.com Staff). Out of guilt of association, 110,000 Japanese-Americans, regardless of their citizenship were sent to internment camps under president Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Executive order 9066. Aggravated by the war, Anti-Japanese movements reached its highest point during this period, with citizens fueling their misdirected hatred and suspicion onto American citizens who happened to be of Japanese descent. At the camps, the Japanese were deprived of their basic human rights and most importantly, they were treated as second hand citizens in order to…

As I watching Kiki’s Delivery Service, I noticed the theme of independence as Kiki is to find her own place to live at the age of thirteen. This closely relates to Japanese culture, as in Japan, they encourage independence and self-reliance from the young age. For example, as a child, they are expected to go to school themselves, taking train or bus if necessary or even doing grocery shopping themselves. This contrasts to the Western culture as many parents disallow children to walk to school alone or even crossing the road until they reach the age of 10. This may be due to fear of children’s safety or seen as ill perceived to let children be alone.…

The gap between the “good wife, wise mother” ideal and experiences of women in reality is also a crucial point to note. To begin with, while the formal attendance rates for girls at elementary schools did see a dramatic increase from 45% in 1895 (the year The Thirteenth Night was published) to 70% in 1900, girls’ education was not widespread before the First Sino-Japanese War. According to Shizuko Koyama: “Even by the early 1890s, when modern school education in Japan was about twenty years old, girls’ education continued to stagnate…in 1892, for instance, rates of elementary school attendance were 72% for boys, but only 37% for girls – and these were the official figures, with actual attendance being lower. Also, in comparison with 16,000 boys enrolled in middle schools, there were only 2,800 enrolled in girls’ middle schools.”…

Idea of Students Cleaning their School “The role of schooling was to equip individuals with the skills necessary to participate in the social life of their community and to change the nature of the social order as needed or desired.” - George Count, American educational philosopher. Schools should be the component that prepare the students to enter the community, while students cleaning their school should be a major role in achieving that goal. This proposal shall teach all the students of what it will be like to be an adult and the responsibility that comes with it. In order to do so, action must be taken and there will be perseverance to fight for the goal, student cleaning is the method to do so.…
