Elementary Children Independence in America vs Elementary Children Independence in Japan Most children in America depend on the adults to do almost everything for them, but Japan is very different because children are nearly always seen doing things by themselves. Although there are many children in America that are very independent, the majority are not, especially children in elementary school. They learn how to do simple tasks but not much is expected of them because they are seen as being too young. Some schools also make it mandatory for the children to go to school alone. In Japan it is not unusual to see elementary students walking or riding on the trains in groups or unaccompanied to school (Documentary looks at why Japanese parents let young kids walk to school by themselves). One reason why this is not uncommon is because this country has one of the lowest homicide rates in the world, less than one person is murdered for every 100,000 in the population, compared to 4.8 for the United States. Although the young American students have “clean-up time” but they usually only have to pick up small toys or small pieces of trash left on the ground. Older students in America are somewhat more responsible when it comes to cleaning up after themselves, but younger children do not grasp this idea. Elementary Japanese students though, do not have this luxury because there is a long tradition of students cleaning the schools themselves. Some schools also expect the elementary students to be unusually thorough when cleaning. In contrast, some Japanese schools do not require the children to clean up, but the majority of them do. Cleaning up will usually begin after lunchtime, where they will clean the entrance hall, classrooms, hallways, stairs, bathrooms, and the gym (YouTube).
