Ambition In Macbeth

The work of Shakespeare is something most adolescents experience throughout their high school years, as Shakespeare is considered one of the greatest writers of the English language. A viewing of the John W. H. Bassett Theatre’s production of Macbeth, directed by Charles Roy, gives an insight into one of the many styles of execution that can be done for a play. Many elements of the play were executed very well, such as set design, lighting, and sound production. However, the play falls short of other crucial elements.

One of Shakespeare’s many tragedies and famous works, Macbeth, revolves around the idea social and political ambition and one’s hunger for power, as well as what one will do for that power. Macbeth informed from a triad of witches (Anna Wheeler), (Kevin Forestell), (Jody Stevens) of the prophecy of how he is the upcoming King of Scotland. With the desire to be King and the pressure from his wife, Lady Macbeth, this leads Macbeth to murder King Duncan as well as anyone he sees as a threat. What immediately caught the attention of many was the set design, which was a single castle-like structure in the middle. It was very simplistic, making it suitable for almost every scene. However, the most prominent feature of the set was the fact that it was able to revolve. This allowed scenes to transition smoothly throughout the play without breaking the immersion of the play, it was also used moderately, not constantly depended on for its transitional aspect. Lighting and sound production was also well done, utilizing blue and red lighting to convey emotion, as well as creating a more realistic feel with the sound effects used in order to create and contribute to the mood and atmosphere of the scenes, giving the the play depth and dimension that would otherwise not be there if the sound and lighting were
