Also, manatees have different characteristics than others. Manatees are big, yet they do not kill others. They are considered the peacemakers because they are not considered prey and don’t attack prey.…

With this internship I will learn the techniques required to successfully photo-ID manatees, which involves both fieldwork and office proficiencies. Although I look forward to gaining marine mammal fieldwork skills, entering the data into various databases will contribute to the conservation and management of the Florida manatee. Learning skills that will ultimately contribute to conservation is of high importance to me. Acquiring photo-ID skills in the office will be an asset to my graduate research, as I will need to be able to identify my study individuals.…

They are omnivores with a diet consisting of crabs, abalone, sea stars, squid, sea urchins, sea worms and around 40 other bottom-dwelling invertebrates. Furthermore, to support their high metabolic rate, sea otters must eat about 25% of their body weight a day.…

To resolve the population genetic structure and phylogeography of the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus), mitochondrial (mt) DNA control region sequences were compared among eight locations across the western Atlantic region. Fifteen haplotypes were identified among 86 individuals from Florida, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana and Brazil. Despite the manatee’s ability to move thousands of kilometres along continental margins, strong population separations between most locations were demonstrated with significant haplotype frequency shifts. These findings are consistent with tagging studies which indicate that stretches of open water and unsuitable coastal habitats constitute substantial barriers…
