As a Georgia native you can imagine my shock when I found out Georgia has it’s very own loch ness monster! The monster’s name is Altamaha-ha, it was given to him by the Creek Indians that lived near the Altamaha-ha river.

The monster has been spotted in Darien and Butler Island, Georgia. The Altamaha River is a beautiful place. It’s known for it’s vast marshes and 18th/19th century rice fields and canals. Scottish people from Inverness (the home of Nessie), were recruited in 1735 to come live and work in Darien, Georgia. A place they first called New Inverness before changing it to Darien. Believers say it’s a 30-ft monster, with a head of a gator (or crocodile) and flippers like a seal. The monster first got national attention in 1981. It was spotted by Larry Gwin, a former newspaper publisher, who was out fishing with his friend. They reported the monster had two big humps that were five feet apart. They even said the monster left behind a wake that was similar to a speed boat.

Tales of the altamaha-ha date back centuries, to the time when the Native Americans roamed the land. One of the first reports given by someone other than a native was on April 18, 1830. A correspondent of the Savannah Georgian newspaper, reported multiple sightings of a monster on the coast! The primary sighting was the one given by Captain Delano of the schooner Eagle, he said he saw the large creature off of St. Simon’s Island below the mouth of the Altamaha-ha River. Several planters on the island backed up his claim, and five other men on his schooner also saw the monster.
In 1969 two brothers were fishing on the Altamaha River at Clark’s Bluff, they reported seeing an animal that they first thought was a sturgeon. They changed their minds after looking at it for awhile and said it was 10-12 feet long, with a gator snout, and a horizontal tail. They also said the creature had a horizontal ridge on it’s back and it’s skin was grayish in

Scientists discount the existence of Bigfoot and consider it to be a combination of folklore, misidentification, and hoax, rather than living animal. However, based on circumstantial evidence one can argue that Bigfoot is real. DNA and footprints have been found in woods in the Pacific Northwest.…
