Acupuncture as an effective treatment for allergic rhinitis.
The aim of this paper is to critically analyse a randomized controlled trial of acupuncture for allergic rhinitis (AR). Choi et al. (2013) hypothesized that the participants would respond more positively to the active acupuncture treatment than to sham acupuncture or no treatment at all. The rationale was that although this traditional method has been used effectively in the past to treat ailments such as osteoarthritis and allergies, randomised trials of acupuncture have been inconclusive. My critique analyses the study through both an evidence based medicine (EBM) and whole systems research (WSR) perspective. This study assigned …show more content…
The treatment controlled the behavioural and physiological history unique to each patient. Therefore, the holistic effect of the treatment could not be measured effectively. As an approach to healing, WSR foundation is based on patient-practitioner interaction which was limited in this study as the medical doctor was active only in delivering the treatment. We are not given any information as to how each individual measured their nasal symptom systems, as relief varies in each person. Data collection was appropriate, it was integrative as it looked at how acupuncture cured their physiological nasal symptoms including nasal obstruction, sleep, and blood pressure, rhinorrhoea, sneezing and itching. The effect of Acupuncture was analysed on a qualitative and quantitative levels which highlighted the important points in the study. On the other hand, the data and statistical analysis did not take into account the personal variables contributing to each person as a whole, nor did it discuss how this could be applied to a patient centered level. This trial further assessed the quality of life and experience before and after treatment to determine the holistic effect the intervention
