All Quiet on the Western Front: Review Erich Maria Remarque was a German born author who wrote All Quiet on the Western Front. Erich was born in Osnabruck, Germany on June 22, 1898. His novel was published on January 29, 1929. Erich fought for the German side during World War 1, he joined the army at the age of 18 in 1917. He fought on the Western Front in the 2nd company, reserves. A month after he joined the war, Erich was wounded by shrapnel in the left leg, right arm and neck. He was sent to an army hospital in Germany. He spent the remainder of the war in the hospital. All Quiet on the Western Front was a touching novel written about a young teen, Paul Baumer, who joined the German military at the age of 19 after his high school teacher gave him and his friend’s inspirational stories about the Great War. It wasn’t until long after the boys joined the military that they discovered they were force fed propaganda about war hero clichés. After two weeks of fighting on the French front Paul and his friends get a break from the war. Kemmerich, a good friend of Paul’s, was visited by the group of school friends after having his leg amputated due to him contracting gangrene. One of Paul’s friends, Muller, wanted to take Kemmerich’s boots for himself. Although most of the soldiers feel Muller is insensitive for wanting to take a dying man’s boots. Paul thinks Muller is justified and based on Kemmerich’s requested Paul gives his boots to Muller. When a group of new recruits joins Paul’s company to reinforce them after suffering heavy losses Paul’s friend Kat gave them a fancy beef and bean stew to impress them.
