Erich Maria Remarque is perhaps one of the greatest German novelists in the early twentieth century. He was born on June 22, 1898, in Osnabruck, Germany. He received U.S. citizenship in 1947, but preferred to live in Europe until he died on September 25, 1970, in Locarno, Switzerland at the age of seventy-two. His famous novel All Quiet on the Western Front was first published in 1928 in the German newspaper Vossische Zeitung and published in a book form later in 1929. Because of the nature of the novel, “it was banned and burned in Nazi Germany for promoting anti-war sentiment” (Tighe 48).…
All Quiet on the Western Front Rewrite We were quiet on the ride into the foreign village, taking in the sights that would be ordinary to anyone else. The thought of simply being somewhere far away from the front was conversation enough. The passengers included myself, Katczinsky, Tjaden, Kropp, Müller, Detering, and a new, young soldier by the name of Arnold Kirchner. Kirchner is 18, but has a boyish face that presents him as no older than 14 and his eyes have had a permanent craven nature since he first arrived.…
Change In the novel “All Quiet on the Western Front”, Erich Remarque shows that the war forced change. It is a recurring theme in the novel for things to be different than they used to be. Whether it was a change in men or relationships, the author showed how the soldiers were forced to adapt to the reality of the war. The war robs men of their previous selves by ripping away everything that they once were.…
Shortly into the first chapter, the young men express their resentment for the older generation who encouraged them by glorifying the act of war by bribing them with a sense of honor and pride when they return. They trusted the older generation because “the idea of authority, which they represented, was associated in our minds with a greater insight and a more humane wisdom.” (Remarque 12) They are not told is that most of them will not make it home alive or that they will barely have enough to eat. Remarque shines light on the realities of war through expressing in great detail the magnitude of danger every situation entailed. For the public, Remarque’s description of Kemmerich’s leg amputation, hiding in coffins, watching a company man die a slow death and stabbing a french soldier gave them a glimpse of what really goes on in battle that they have never been exposed to, taking away the glorification of all ideas they had about war.…
There are many ways that soldiers attitudes differ from civilians. The book “All Quiet on the Western Front” shows many of these differences. First, a soldier is less concerned about privacy or modesty than a civilian. This is seen when Paul, the main character and narrator in the story, remarks how embarrassed he was in the public latrine for the first time. After some time at war, he and his friends moved three of the personal toilets to form a ring so they can play a game while using them.…
After experiencing the war, nothing is the same as what it once is, books which Paul read many times are no longer valuable to him, his own house has an eerie strangeness to it. Going from having to be on guard at any mosoldierst and living with constant anxiety and stress, to going back to a time when Paul still had his youth, his innocence, and is carefree, is a big change. The experience of war will take away Paul’s and his fellow soldier’s curiosity and aptitude for fun and learning for the rest of their lives. The soldier’s relationships with their environment and peers will never be the same after the…

All Quiet on the Western Front and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder All Quiet on the Western Front causes its readers to imagine the horrors of war. "In the branches dead men are hanging. A naked soldier is squatting in the fork of a tree, he still has his helmet on, otherwise he is entirely unclad. There is only half of him sitting up there...and somewhere else is plastered a bloody mess that was once a human limb. Over there lies a body...”…
World War 1 and wars in general were always made to show honor and glory. In Erich Maria Remarque’s novel, All Quiet On the Western Front, he gives readers a new look on war that was rarely shown before. He uses Paul Baumer, the main character, to tell his story of what he experienced on the German side during World War 1. Remarque uses symbolism throughout his novel to help emphasize his feelings of war and how it affects the characters in the story. He incorporates Hemmerich’s boots, butterflies and horses to show the horror, along with the effects of war that the soldiers experienced.…
Death is everywhere, it is in your home and in the streets, it can happen to everyone and anyone, death has no discrimination. “ It would be neat, if with the New Year” by Jimmy Baca is a short poem, which holds a deep significance about the past and future, about things that have been parts of our ordinary life. In the poem, the speaker desires a fresh start in his life, but in the end he soon realizes that he can never throw away his past to move on completely. With the skillful uses of symbolism, metaphor, imagery, and narrative poetry, the author successfully leads the mystery and depth of the poem to the readers. To begin with, Baca purposely creates a diversion in the title and the first two sentences to surprise the reader later in the poem. As first, he believes that moving on is the right thing, “It would be neat if with the New Year” (line 1), which shows…
“This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure. Death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it. It will try simply to tell of a beginning generation of men who, even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war”(Remarque). Taking place in World War two, a young man loses everything he held dear to him by becoming a soldier. In All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, Erich demonstrates how the war can force soldiers to grow up by destroying their identity, youth, and innocence.…
Chapter 5 explains the living conditions they dealt with at the front. There were lice all over their bodies. Paul finds out that out of all of the classmates that joined the army with him, only 12 survived. Paul explains to all soldiers to cut their emotions off or they will go crazy from the war. In order to survive in the war, they must kill animals to eat.…
A soldier is barraged with emotions during a war, that he must avoid in order to survive. War has forced a soldier to become detached, as he must always stay neutral in order to get through the battle. As the soldier observes innocent creatures being destroyed and watches death occur, he must not let this affect him as he has to block it out. In All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Maria Remarque uses horses and butterflies to represent how war forces soldiers to conceal their emotions, which protects him from the brutal experiences of war.…
