Comparisons:

Effect of crushed vs. whole tablet:
The crushed tablet reacted faster because its surface area is smaller, allowing the particles to react faster with the water. The crushed tablet also produced frothy bubbles all over the water, whereas the reaction (bubbles) of the whole tablet was primarily around the tablet in the water.

Temperature effect:
The reaction was extremely slow in the cold water as molecules do not move as fast in cold water. Once you increased the temperature you could see the molecules move more vigorously.

Acetic acid effect—5%, 2.5%, 0%

The bubbles produced in the vinegar are different than those produced in the glasses with more water. The two glasses that contained vinegar produced a vigorous bubbles, but became frothy, and cloudy.

What factor affected the rate of the reaction when comparing the whole Alka Seltzer tablet to the crushed Alka Seltzer tablet?

The factor that affected the rate of reaction is the Alka Seltzer size. Even though both cups contained the same materials, crushing the Alka Seltzer created smaller particles which allowed for a bigger surface area for the Alka Seltzer to react with the water.

3. Which temperature (hot, cold, room temperature) caused the reaction to proceed the fastest? Why? How does this relate to the diffusion experiment?

The hot water caused the Alka Seltzer to proceed the fastest because the higher heat sped up the chemical reaction. This experiment relates to the diffusion experiment because the higher temperature in both experiments produced the fastest results. In the diffusion experiment, the highest temperature allowed the food color molecules to move at a faster rate, allowing the food color to diffuse in the water the fastest. Like the diffusion experiment, the higher temperature in this experiment produced a faster chemical reaction, allowing the Alka Seltzer to dissolve the

    It was accurately impossible to start the timer concurrently with Alka-Seltzer contacting water, therefore the timing of the rate of reaction were slightly off. Next time when this lab is performed, there should be an automatic timer which starts automatically as soon as the Alka-Seltzer contacts the water so that the rate of reaction is accurate.
