In the story “Roman Fever”, Alida Slade had to survive with the change in her social identity now that her husband has passed away. Being married to Delphin, Alida Slade felt she had an advantage over Grace Ansley. Mrs.Slade is envious that her husband showed such interest in Mrs. Ansley. Often found comparing herself to Grace Ansley, Alida Slade is very insecure and has an aggressive urge to deprive Grace Ansley of her happiness as she forges the letter as Delphin. Alida Slade is driven by the aggressive feelings she has for Grace Ansley, which gave her the idea to write the fake letter as Delphin. “I was afraid; afraid of you, of your quiet ways, your sweetness”. She showed insecurity about herself, which is where the negative feelings towards Grace developed. This is when Mrs. Slade made a plan to take away any competition there was between her and Mrs. Ansley.
